Haringey school one of most improved in capital

A BUSINESS and enterprise specialist school in Wood Green has been named one of the most improved secondary schools in London.

Woodside High, in White Hart Lane, increased the number of pupils achieving top grades at GCSE, including maths and English, by 10 percentage points.

In 2007/08, the school achieved just 28 per cent which fell below the recommended 30 per cent threshold.

The poor results prompted schools secretary Ed Balls to order the school to improve or risk closure.

But the following year the secondary school, headed by Joan McVittie, achieved an impressive 38 per cent.

Th improvement has secured the school a place on the list of just 23 schools out of hundreds in the capital to be given a special mention.

Schools minister Diana Johnson said: "Congratulations to London schools that today top the nine regions across the country with the highest percentage of pupils achieving five good GCSEs including English and maths. What a journey from a decade ago.

"This is a team effort and shows what can be achieved with targeted support and dedication."
