A Nigerian student immersed in a two-year battle to stay in the country he considers home, has got his happy ending — for now.
Damilola Ajagbonna, 20, who returned to West Africa last month, has been granted the right to stay in the UK for three years.
He was forced to turn down a place at Cambridge after being threatened with deportation but the Home Office will allow him to complete his university education.
The former head boy of Greig City Academy, in High Street, Hornsey, left the UK after nine years here, after his final bid for permanent residency failed.
Mr Ajagbonna achieved 13 GCSEs and three A-levels while studying at the school. He also mentored younger and struggling students and hoped eventually to become a teacher.
He has now returned to his home in Luton and plans to start a teaching degree in September.
