Haringey Key Stage 2 results reveal pupils fail to meet national average in maths and reading

YEAR 6 pupils in Haringey are struggling to meet national targets in controversial end of term tests, according to the latest Sats results.

The tests are said to determine how well primary school leavers are performing in key areas including English, maths, reading and writing.

Some teachers have criticised Key Stage 2 Sats for taking away the focus from real learning, and in Haringey more than half of the borough's 57 primary schools boycotted the tests.

Councillor Lorna Reith, cabinet member for children’s services, said: "Following a teachers union ballot to boycott SATs, seven out of 10 of Haringey schools decided not to carry out SATs, but instead chose to assess their pupils’ progress by teacher assessment.

"These schools felt this was a more accurate reflection of the ability of the child, rather than a snapshot based on a test."

She added: "We are confident that the teacher assessments reflect the true attainment of the children and these would have been the same had the tests been carried out."

Haringey Council said primary school advisors visited schools who shunned Sats to work with class teachers to ensure accuracy in assessing attainment in reading, writing and maths.

Of the schools that participated in Sats, 74 per cent of pupils achieved a minimum Level 4 in writing, three percentage points higher than the national average.

Pupils are meeting the standard required in core subject English, but still flagging in maths and, importantly, in reading.

The provisional figures also show that within Haringey, girls are outperforming boys in three of the four tests with the exception of maths where 78 per cent of 11-year-old boys achieved a Level 4 compared with 77 per cent for their female counterparts.

There was a significant gap of ten percentage points between the sexes in writing, where only 69 per cent of boys were able to achieve a Level 4 or above.
