Sports enthusiast honoured for transforming Albert Road Rec

THE efforts of a Haringey resident in transforming Albert Rec into a "community treasure" have earned him the title of sports development officer of the year.

Robby Sukhdeo won two awards at the Institute for Sport, Parks and Leisure Awards and was also honoured for his achievements in the private sector.

The sports enthusiast is the leaseholder of the Pavilion Café, based in the grounds of Albert Road, off Alexandra Park Road.

It is from here that he runs Haringey Tennis which provides easy access to the sport for the entire community.

Not content with running the club, Mr Sukhedo is also the event co-ordinator and communications officer for Friends of Albert Road Recreation Ground.

Over the past few years, he has worked closely with the group and Haringey Council to transform the park into one of the borough's most well-used green spaces.

A derelict building became a thriving community centre and the quality of sports facilities has goen from strength-to-strength.

The park can now boast running sessions in football, tennis, basketball, Aussie Rules, cricket and netball.

And in June 2008, the park was named one of the best for tennis by the Lawn Tennis Association just weeks after the Tennis Foundation selected Albert Rec as a beacon site for tennis, helping to attract huge investment.

The hard-working man sports officer said: "It's a real honour to be given these awards but it has been a been a real team effort.

"It involves the other members of the Friends of Albert Road Recreation Ground Group, local people and Haringey Council.

"The park is now a real treasure in the local community."

Councillor Dhiren Basu, cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong learning, praised the whole Albert Road gang for their efforts calling the accolades a "fantastic achievement".
