Leytonstone man jailed for part in cash mashine theft

A LEYTONSTONE man has been jailed for his role in a foiled attempt to steal a cash machine stacked with cash.

Jason Perry, 38, of Clover Close, in Leytonstone, was part of a gang of three who were jailed today for a total of 14 years for burglary offences across London, Sussex, Suffolk, Essex and Kent.

Perry was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court today to five years and eight months imprisonment after admitting conspiracy to commit nine counts of burglary between October 23 and July 25, 2009.

He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Darren Rutter, 32, of High Meadows, Chigwell, was sentenced to three years and four months in jail after admitting three counts of burglary.

Paul Thompson, 40, of Uxbridge Road, Shepherds Bush, was sentenced to five years in jail for conspiracy to commit five counts of burglary, dangerous driving, and driving whilst being disqualified.

He was disqualified from driving for five years.

On July 25 last year, at 3am, the gang used a seven-and-a-half tonne truck to pull an ATM cash point from Barclays Bank in Finchley Road, Golders Green.

It was driven away in the truck by Thompson eastbound along the A406 North Circular Road and chased by police for more than ten miles. Thompson failed to stop and rammed the truck into pursuing police cars.

The pursuit ended when Thompson drove the truck into a dead-end and reversed into the police cars that followed him. Following a violent struggle, Thompson was arrested and detained by officers.

Thompson's accomplices, Perry and Rutter, were arrested in a white printer van parked close to the Barclays Bank, and both men were also involved in a violent struggle prior to their arrest.

During the arrests, six police cars were damaged and two police officers were hurt and needed hospital treatment for shoulder and head injuries. Both officers have now fully recovered.

Detective Inspector David Malcolm, of the Finchley Flying Squad, said: "The evidence against this gang of three is not only overwhelming but testimony to how much planning and precision they used to commit crime. This team went to great lengths to ensure that they had specialist equipment to aid them in their criminal activities.

"At the time of their arrests, Rutter, Thompson and Perry had absolutely no regard for anyone's safety. I would like to acknowledge the forward thinking and bravery of the officers at the Finchley Flying Squad, two of whom were injured during the course of the arrest and thank them for keeping disruption to members of the public to a minimum."
