WOODFORD GREEN: MP lends support to campaigners against 'lorry chaos'
IAIN Duncan Smith has joined calls for 'disruptive' lorry deliveries to a Sainsbury's supermarket to be stopped.
Neighbours complain deliveries to the store in The Broadway, Woodford Green, cause long tailbacks and compromise safety as the lorries are too big for the narrow road and want Sainsbury's to use smaller vans.
They say empty trolleys also frequently block the pavement, creating an extra hazard.
Now the Woodford Green MP has called on Sainsbury's, which opened the shop five months ago, to restrict their delivery times.
Mr Duncan Smith said: "I am very concerned that deliveries are being made to Sainsbury’s between 10am and 11am.
"This is obviously a real nuisance for local residents as it creates a lot of traffic on that stretch of road.
"The road is also not suitable for such big lorries - it is a bendy road which can barely fit two lanes in as it is."
Residents welcomed Mr Duncan Smith's support on the issue.
Lilian Strickett, 88, of Kings Avenue, said: "I hope he can do something because it's a distressing matter.
"The lorries are far too big and hold up traffic in the road while we have to dodge trolleys to walk up the street."
Caroline Kamstra-White, 50, of Monkhams Avenue, added: "We sit in the coffee shop in the morning and it's chaos outside. It's been horrendous for people and businesses trying to get on with their day."
A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: "We try hard to be a good neighbour and we work closely with our depots and suppliers to try to minimise the inconvenience our deliveries may cause to local residents and businesses.
"We use the smallest delivery vans available to us and have instructed our suppliers to stagger their delivery times to try to ensure multiple vehicles aren’t delivering to the store at the same time.
"We will continue to deliver to the store after 10am to avoid the peak commuter traffic at the Tube station, thereby keeping congestion to a minimum."
A spokesman added that the delivery restrictions only apply between 11pm and 7am.
