A HUNT is under way for the owner of a dog that tried to savage the face of a woman who was walking her dogs in a North Finchley park on Tuesday.

The vicious Staffordshire cross launched into an attack on two of the dogs, and the owner, in Glebelands open grounds, Summers Lane, at about 6.30pm.

The 49-year-old woman, who was walking with a man in his 60s, had three of her dog with them when they were approached by the brindled coloured pet.

Police said the aggressive dog attacked one of the bitches, and when the victim picked up her dog to protect it, the suspect's dog “leapt at her and snapped at her face”.

Another of the woman's dogs hid under a car as it was chased by the Staffordshire cross, and was only rescued when the friend, along with a passer by, restrained the attacking dog while they waited for the owner to arrive.

The owner of the dog took control of her pet but fled the scene having refused to give her details.

She is described as a white woman in her 50s. Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed the attack.

A statement from Barnet Police confirmed the breed is not banned, but said: “This incident goes to show that it is not just banned or illegal breeds that can cause problems, but any irresponsible dog ownership.

“All dog owners must ensure that they are confidently in control of their dog at all times, so it does not pose a risk or threat to other people or animals.

“If the dog's temperament or training is such that it may not respond to an owners commands in the presence of other people or animals, then a leash or muzzle must be used in public areas.”

Anyone with information should contact Barnet police on 0300 123 1212 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

The Times-Series has launched its Biting Back campaign to tackle irresponsible dog owners.
