LOUGHTON: Speeding Spurs striker has vehicle seized
A PREMIER League footballer had his £60,000 car seized in Loughton for driving without a valid licence.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane, 27, was ordered to surrender the high-performance, silver-coloured Range Rover Sport on the spot after being pulled over for speeding on Chigwell Lane (the A1168).
Essex Police officers discovered his licence was invalid because he had been landed with an earlier fine for speeding.
He was stopped after leaving the club's training ground in Luxborough Lane, Chigwell, shortly after 3pm yesterday (Wednesday).
It left him stranded on the busy A-road and he had to call for a lift home.
A police spokesman said: "The man, a 27-year-old, from Barnet, was stopped for driving at excessive speed and otherwise in accordance with his licence."
He added: "His driver's licence was found to have expired and the vehicle was seized."
A Tottenham Hotspur spokesman said it had happened because Keane had forgotten to send in documents to the DVLA after paying off the original fine when it was issued a couple of years ago.
He said the player expected to get his car back the following day.
In a statement released through the club, Keane said: "I fully appreciate that it was my responsibility to sort out my licence. It was a genuine oversight on my part and it is now being rectified."
The £60,000-a-week player is one of the most prolific strikers in the English Premier League having scored 22 goals for Spurs this season.
He is captain of the Republic of Ireland national team and his country's record goalscorer. He has been the subject of £38 million worth of transfer deals during his 11-year career.

He says footballers think they are above the law and that Keano has learned his lesson, and had his keys taken away by coppers. he doesn't like spurs but does like Chelski and Orient.
No accounting for taste.
