Bridge rescue Samaritan
Mandy Collier and Margaret Harwood
Mandy Collier and Margaret Harwood

A DISABLED driver who was left stranded after her car's tyres burst on Marlow Bridge would like to thank a mystery Samaritan who came to her rescue.

Mandy Collier, 47, from Bourne End, was crossing the bridge from Bisham into Marlow after a day out with her elderly friend Margaret Harwood, who is also disabled.

Mrs Collier, who suffers from mobility problems and is also agoraphobic, said: "I was just taking her home after a day out. She can't get out much so I was just taking her to the shops for a nice day out."

However, disaster struck when Mrs Collier caught her tyre on the bollards on the Marlow side of the bridge. The tyre ripped, and she was left marooned in the middle of the road as thoughtless motorists pushed past.

She said: "I could not move the car so we were sat in the middle of the road. I had forgotten my mobile phone so we were stuck, neither of us able to walk far.

"Most people were just driving past - they just looked and didn't help. It was frustrating, you think what am I going to do?'"

The accident happened at around 4pm on February 27, just as rush hour was starting. It was raining heavily, and Mrs Collier was unable to change her tyre.

Luckily, four landscape gardeners pulled up in a 4x4 and came to Mrs Collier's aid.

She said: "It was an answer to our prayers. One of them let me use his mobile phone, but it was out of battery, so he changed the tyre.

"It was pouring with rain, but the man told us to stay in the car while he got down on his hands and knees to fix the tyre."

Mrs Collier gave the man some money to buy himself a drink. Afterwards, the gardeners drove off.

Mrs Collier said: "I just want to say a huge thank you to them because I don't know how long I would have been stuck out there otherwise."

What a change to hear that there are some people out there who are prepared to help others. Makes a change from the couldn't care less attitude of the majoroity of people.
