Plans for more than 100 new homes in Bexleyheath submitted

PLANS for more than 100 new homes at the rear of the former Woolwich site in Bexleyheath have been submitted by Tesco.

The scheme proposes 127 new homes - 49 houses and 78 apartments, including residents’ parking, gardens and play areas, along Chieveley Road and Pinnacle Hill.

Existing buildings will need to be demolished on the site before the scheme can go ahead, proposed to be done in spring this year subject to approval from Bexley Council.

Tesco originally proposed 150 homes but slashed the number following residents’ comments at a public exhibition at Bexleyheath’s Central Library last September.

It is also replacing the proposed three storey apartments on Erith Road with two storey houses and increasing the levels of car parking.

Erith Road resident June Uttridge is pleased with the amendments after previously slamming the original size of the homes as “ludicrous”.

The 80-year-old said: “I was concerned about the buildings looking down on us and a big block of housing being stuck there.

“But we’re quite happy with the new plans.

“We’ve got our own way.”

Corporate affairs manager for Tesco, Tony Fletcher says the superstore worked hard to listen to peoples’ views.

He added: “Tesco has a long standing interest to invest in Bexleyheath.

“The feedback we received at our public exhibition was generally very positive and many felt the plans were much more in keeping with their residential surroundings than earlier proposals.”

As part of a separate proposal, Tesco is planning to build a new 80,000 sq ft store on the existing council office site in Broadway.

This will include a 500 space underground car park, a new community space and a pedestrian plaza, achieved by closing the northern section of Highland Road.

The development will begin towards the end of 2014.
