Budding musicians awarded scholarships by Mayor of London

Budding musicians have been awarded scholarships and funding from the Mayor of London.
Kingston youngsters Abdullah Jamil, nine, Farwa Haider, eight, Shane Armstrong, eight, and Soyeon Kim, 10, were among the 100 talented children recognised in the Mayor’s Fund for Young Musicians (MFYM).
The scholarships go to children aged seven to 11 who show outstanding potential and commitment to learning an instrument but may come from families who struggle to pay for lessons.
The scholars will benefit from weekly tuition, membership of ensembles, performance opportunities and be assigned a dedicated mentor.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “Sadly, too many families in London cannot afford to pay for music lessons, even for very talented children.
“By investing in these scholarships and partnerships programmes, the fund will be enriching the lives of thousands of children and also make sure London remains the top city in the world for all kinds of music.”
The Kingston keyboarders and brass players were awarded certificates for their achievements from double Mobo award-winning saxophonist YolanDa Brown at City Hall, London on Friday, January 27.
MFYM has been working with London’s 32 borough music services, including Kingston Music Service, to identify the scholars.
