SIDCUP: Parents protest against home teaching proposals

PARENTS in Bexley have handed over a petition to one of the borough’s MPs urging Parliament to reject the findings of a report on home schooling.

Old Bexley and Sidcup MP Derek Conway received the petition from brother and sister Constance and Alexander Turnbull aged 17 and 19, of Hadlow Road, Sidcup, who were home schooled.

The Bradman Report suggested home educators should be more closely monitored, with rules including a compulsory annual registration scheme and a right of access to people’s homes for local authority officials.

The petition claims the report was rushed and has major failings.

It says further legislation proposals should be withdrawn and the current guidelines properly enforced.

The petition is part of a nationwide campaign organised by parents’ action groups.

Mr Conway said: “If Constance and Alexander Turnbull are examples of home tuition then I defy any petty bureaucrat to demonstrate the folly of teaching a child at home, if the parental capacity exists.”

Derek CONway looks like a startled Cockroach...!!
He stopped on in Parliament despite repaying the 'fees' he paid his son's for 'work', CONway shouldered the disgrace, so that he can still draw long and deep from the trough of Public funds, provided by the ratepayer.
I support home education, however it's a shame that CONway is involved.

My grandson is taught in the state system but he has a group of friends all 15 and 16 years old who have been home educated. These teens are well mannered, vibrant, knowledgeable and intelligent. They are articulate, confident and enjoy a good social life along with their education. Thinking about it? don't think twice.......

But what checks currently take place to say the children taking part in home schooling actually, actually get taught? Looking at my grammar and spelling I think I need to go back to school!

You could say that you are teaching at home and then let them watch tv all day?

I wholeheartedly support Constance and Alexander in there petition.
Unfortunately, the recipient the MP Derek CONway is one of the last MP's to approach to validate the petition.
He has had the Conservative Party Whip withdrawn, CONway should have appeared in Court charged with 'Misconduct in Public Office' plus charges under the Theft Act.
This odious disreputable little man clings to his disreputable job for only one reason....ratepayers money...!!!
