LEYTON/WANSTEAD: Clarification regarding Harry Cohen MP

We would like to point out that Leyton and Wanstead MP Harry Cohen did not accept free trips to India paid for by the taxpayer.

Mr Cohen's official meetings with the Dalai Lama have been solely financed by the Tibet Society.

The Guardian apologises for the error.

Its an interesting question. I do note that the Tibet Society itself (which to be fair does have paying individual members) does not sem to publish its accounts on the internet, so it is not obvious where all of its funding comes from. It is not easy, therefore, to know whether the society itself has ever accepted funds directly or indirectly, from the British taxpayer.

I can confirm that this trip was financed by totally the Tibet Society after Harry convinced them that not only was he more important than Winston Churchill, but he felt he could teach the Dalai Lama a thing or two as well.

That's a relief to know: heaven forbid that Mr C should pay for a trip himself. The Tibet Society do have offices in London, though, which might have saved a bit of jetlag, and the DL himself passes through from time to time.
Obviously the Dalai Lama wanted to put on a good show, but short of smuggling Mr C in a saffron robe over the Himalayas on the back of a yak, I don't see how looking at the south side of them would tell him any more about the hard times going on on the north side than we can all read in the papers.
