A HOLE was ripped in the tank of a fuel lorry which crashed into the central reservation of the M40 last night, spilling diesel and causing another crash.

The southbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions 5 and 4 had to be closed following the accident.

One car skidded in the spilt fuel and another crashed.

Fire crews from Stokenchurch and High Wycombe were called out around 8.30pm.

High Wycombe crew manager Phil Sears said: “It had crashed into the central reservation and ripped its fuel tank.

“It managed to continue to drive and pull over onto the hard shoulder but all the fuel went across the road on all three lanes.

“One car crashed as a result and one skidded so we closed the motorway because there could have been a fatality.”

Nobody was injured and there was minimal damage to the car.

The Highways Agency and police took over the operation and cleared up the spillage.

Barrier repairs were still going on around 1.30am and lanes two and three were closed. It re-opend about 5am.
