Uni team to take on Three Peaks

1:00pm Thursday 9th July 2009

EMPLOYEES from the IT department at Bucks New University are determined to take on the Three Peaks Challenge this weekend which involves climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland within 24 hours.

Their aim is to raise £2,000 for Action Medical Research, a charity funding the prevention and treatment of conditions affecting children and babies across the UK. AMR have been successful with medical breakthroughs over the past 60 years including the development of the UK polio vaccine.

Sponsorship money would help AMR to prevent life threatening infections such as meningitis, help to develop treatments to improve the quality of life for disabled children and hopefully provide cures for rare conditions.

The Bucks New University team will begin their challenge at 5am on Saturday, and hope to complete it on Sunday. The team will start with Scotland’s Ben Nevis, measuring 4,409ft. Afterwards, they will face England’s Scafell Pike, measuring 3,206ft, then finish at the base of Snowdon, boasting the height of 3,560ft.

Competing teams face another challenge of taking Paddington Bear, the charity’s mascot who plays a vital role in fundraising ventures, up and down each mountain. Awards will be given for the fastest team, greatest team spirit and best fundraisers.

The climbing team consists of Bucks employees Jason Bateman, Robert Bleasdale, Steve Hoole from Aylesbury and Wycombe as well as Nathan Trim from Southampton. Bucks employees Dave Bull and Ferrah Orosco will be assisting.

When Paul Kilgallon recently turned 40, it prompted him to take on the challenge for a good cause. Paul said: “I thought that it was a good thing to do for charity and would also be a great personal achievement. I am planning an even tougher event for next year - the Five Peaks Challenge.”
