Shooting hoops to fight crime
COPS are holding a basketball tournament to build better relationships with young people and steer them away from a life of crime.
Teams from local youth groups and schools will be shooting hoops in the round-robin tournament, being organised by Harrow officers.
Sergeant Paul Mills, of the Wealdstone Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "We want to bring in youths of all communities, help to give them a bit of focus and divert them away from anti-social behaviour.
"We are particularly keen to involve young Somali people, to stop them at an early age from going into areas of criminality."
Sergeant Mills said he hoped the tournament, being held on Wednesday, May 28, at Holy Trinity Church, in Headstone Drive, Wealdstone, will encourage young people from the area build better relations with local officers.
He said: "Particularly with Somali young people, there is a perception they are involved in drug activity in Wealdstone.
"But the groups that hang around the high street and Royal Fried Chicken are not necessarily involved in crime.
"They may see activities but don't pass on information to police because they don't think they can come forward.
"We are hoping to improve that."
Around 80 young people are already signed up to the basketball tournament, but there are more places available.
