EPPING FOREST: Cycle path plan for Olympic visitors

CYCLISTS in the district could benefit from a multi-million-pound investment into cycle paths aimed at encouraging spectators to ride their bikes to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Organisers of the Games, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), has revealed plans to upgrade existing lanes across the capital and create new ones, including a possible off-road route from Epping Forest to Wanstead.

An ODA spokesman said the exact location of the route through the 12-mile long forest has not yet been decided, but it was hoped it would be accessible to residents in the Epping Forest district.

He said detailed plans will be published later this year.

To encourage participation and to promote safety, the scheme could include time-tabled rides from different points to lead cyclists in convoys to Olympic venues.

Hugh Sumner, director of transport at the ODA, said: "One of our key areas of concern is ensuring groups such as young families, or people who do not cycle regularly, feel confident and safe enough to cycle to London 2012 events."

He added: "We're investing money in developing and improving both off-road cycle routes and canal towpaths and greenways, and on-road routes using quieter roads and parks linking to the Olympic Park and other venues."

A spokesman for the Corporation of London, which owns and manages Epping Forest, said it is working closely with Essex County Council and Redbridge Borough Council over plans to improve roads and paths in the area.

He said residents would be fully consulted on any proposals later this year, and added: "The cycle lanes giving access to the Olympic Park could be part of these plans, but it's very early days yet and all options are being considered.

"It would be important to make sure that if anything is put in place it has long-term benefits as well as serving the needs of the Olympics."
