We have some of the cleanest streets in the capital

Cllr Terry Neville says that the council cannot afford to rest on its laurels

ENFIELD has some of the cleanest streets in London, according to a year-long survey.

It was ranked third out of the capital's 33 boroughs in a report published by the Audit Commission, with only 7.3 per cent of streets having land and highways with unacceptable amounts of litter and rubbish.

That left Enfield behind only Kensington and Chelsea (98 per cent of streets acceptably clean) and the Corporation of London (97 per cent) in the list.

The survey covered a 12-month period ending March 31, 2007 with union the GMB ranking the streets accordingly.

Cllr Terry Neville, cabinet member for environment, said: "Enfield Council has invested millions over the last five years into improving the street cleaning service and prosecuted countless flytippers and litter louts.

"But we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. We must not let up with our zero tolerance approach to enviro crime and investment in the street cleaning service if we are to realise our aim to make Enfield the cleanest borough in London."

However, neighbouring Haringey was found to have the dirtiest streets not only in London, but also in England, with 40.1 per cent of its roads unacceptably dirty.

Sevenoaks, in Kent, had the cleanest streets in England with 100 per cent assessed as clean.

Ed Blissett, regional secretary of the GMB, said: "Overall we are seeing a 14 per cent improvement in street cleanliness across England in the last year.

"This is good news for our environment and it is a testament to local councils and their street cleaners."
