Margaret Godwin and Ron Higginson

An energetic 84-year-old will complete the eight-mile Towpath Trundle walk for the 16th time next Sunday.

Ron Higginson, from Stoneleigh, will lead the annual event with hundreds of walkers.

The walk is organised by the Thames Ditton Friends of the Princess Alice Hospice Committee to raise funds for the hospice, which is in Esher.

"The care the hospice gave my wife was amazing," said Ron. "Even after all these years I am still very grateful for everything they did for us. That is why I still support this wonderful charity.

"I always aim to finish the course as close to two hours as possible, last year my friend and I completed the course in two hours and 10 minutes, I am hoping for a similar time this year although."

Last year 1,100 walkers took part and raised more than £15,000.

Event organiser Margaret Godwin said: "It is great to see lots of new faces, but it is even more special to welcome back our long-term supporters. Over the years, Ron has encouraged others to take part; one year that I remember particularly well was when he brought along twelve very glamorous girls from the Chelsea Building Society."

The walk starts at Sadlers Ride, Molesey or Walton Bridge, with options to complete a four or eight-mile course.

Entry is £6 for adults or £3 for under-16s and over-60s. Family entry is £12 with free entry for the under 5s.
