WALTHAM Forest is home to a number of Al Qaeda-inspired extremists who are a "high-level" threat to the Olympics, a report has claimed.
The national Guardian newspaper (link) says councillors in the borough have been shown a restricted counter-terrorism local profile (CTLP) report from the police and the Home Office in the run-up to the Games this summer.
It apparently states that there is "a high-level threat of AQ-inspired extremism from males aged between 20 and 38.
"The individuals of interest to the police are predominantly British-born, second and third-generation migrants from south-east Asia," it continues.
"There is also interest from a number of Middle Eastern political movements and AQ-affiliated groups from north Africa."
The Guardian report claims that Games officials are "uneasy" about the propsect of a home-grown terrorist attack during the Olympics and fear possible action from 'lone wolf' individuals who are harder to detect.
It says a paper on how Waltham Forest implements the government's Prevent strategy on combating violent extremism reports additional local concerns such as "perceptions of inequality driven by relatively high deprivation levels, particularly within Pakistani communities".
It states there is a "growing discontent on local benefits around the Olympics" and also acknowledges the growth far-right extremism.
