One of Walthamstow's rising stars impresses shoppers with a performance in a shop window

AN aspiring singer wowed the crowds on London’s busiest shopping street.

Part-time shop assistant Leanne Robinson, of Carlton Road in Walthamstow, performed to hundreds in the window of House of Fraser in Oxford Street on Saturday.

The 19-year-old said: “I was so nervous because it was 2pm on a Saturday and there were lots of people watching, but I had protective glass around me.

"It was certainly different from anything I have done before, but I really enjoyed it. The crowds were great, clapping along and taking pictures.

“I felt a bit like a mannequin who had come to life.” Before her performance, the former Holy Family College student and three other finalists of the “Search for a Star” competition were made to feel like stars after undergoing a full hair and clothes makeover by celebrity stylist Mark Heyes from GMTV, who also hosted the event.

After a warm-up in the department store, the pop and R&B singer, who trained at the Brit School and has previously sung in clubs, performed five songs including, “If I was a boy”, by Beyonce and “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse.

Leanne came second in the competition organised by the Retail Trust charity, which supports retail sector workers, but was not too disappointed as her second single, called “Run”, will be released by ICM Entertainment shortly.

She said: “There's more talent in retail than people would expect.

"My new single has been played on BBC Radio 3 and is being released to download soon. It is going well. It is hard to get known, but once you do, you are laughing, so I am working towards that.”

Juggling her singing with studying for a degree in music management at Hertfordshire University, Leanne hopes to be as successful as her role models Beyonce and Whitney Houston.

She said: “My parents are really supportive and keep me grounded. I am back at work tomorrow so I will have to get back to normal. But I enjoy my job, so I don't mind – for now.”

What do you mean by that?

Why do people think it is so easy these days to earn a living by singing/ You either have it or not.

Shirley Bassy did and Tom Jones

What do you mean what do I mean? Isn't it obvious? I'm expressing support for and admiration of local young talent when it shines through. There's so much negativity about our young people and even when there's a good news story for a change people still knock it - as with the recent KCK story for example. Your comment reads like more such sour grapes. Of course it's not easy to earn a living but this young woman is making the effort and that should be applauded. Even Dame Shirley and Sir Tom had to start somewhere!

Tracey you are right, she must think it's so easy. All she's done is:

_Get selected for Brit School
_Train at Brit School
_Sung in clubs
_come second in a competition
_Get her second single released
_Get her single played on BBC Radio
_Study for a degree in music management at university
_hold down a part-time job.

That's all very well, but unless the first poster was being sarcastic with his/her comment, I don't see why you're taking offence - to me it reads like a supportive comment.

Some people seem a bit quick to take offence where none was intended.

of course, if the first poster was indeed being sarcastic and knocking the achievements then they deserve to be given some stick..

And I'll echo that "go girl!" comment - well done. I wish we had more stories like this in the news - in fact, maybe the guardian/council should consider putting in a bit more effort into reporting this kind of story. If people see that their achievements are recognised, encouraged and rewarded on a more regular basis, then they might be more inclined to put more effort into doing something positive.

With so many negative stories outweighing the positive ones, it's probably enough to push some borderline youngsters in the wrong direction when they could just as easily been pushed in the right direction.

If you check out my second posting , andychurchill, you'll see I wasn't being in the least bit sarcastic. In fact you and I are obviously in accord on this one.
