A 24-year-old man suffered serious burns after being attacked with acid and stabbed, in Marchant Road, Leytonstone

A MAN is in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked with acid and stabbed in the back.

Police in are appealing for information and witnesses following the attack, which took place in Marchant Road at about 2am.

The victim, 24, was walking along the road when he was approached by a group.

They then threw a noxious liquid over him, causing serious burns to his face and chest, before stabbing him twice in the back.

The gang were reportedly wearing masks and gloves so that they would not be burned with the acid.

He managed to escape his attackers and raise the alarm and an ambulance was called.

If he survives, it is feared he could lose his sight.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Waltham Forest CID on 8345 3146 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

We wondered if it was gang related and whether bears see stars in the woods or forest.

It is such a lovely area what with the Olympics.

even going to the pie and mash shop feels risky in Leytonstone now. Theres a nasty little bunch always lurking about even staring at the pie and mash diners

Yes, they are probably wondering how on earth anyone can eat that stodge.

However, I should say if you want to eat safety pie and mash and eels and cup tea, there is a new one in posh Wanstead, opposite, the Barclays Bank.

Posh people peer and wonder like the ferals of Leytonstone, how anyone can eat the stuff. It is nice though!

People stop and stare, you can't see their faces, only the echo's of their mind. I personally would like to go where the sun keeps shining, in the pouring rain, where the weather suits my clothes.

I live just up the road from where it happened but didn't hear anything - was a mare not being able to get out with the car today!

I disagree with the other posts - I generally feel safe in Leytonstone - in the main people are lovely and there is a great community feel, with a wide mix of demographics living here.

Obviously the one or two bad ones spoil it for the rest of us, and we all know the places to avoid....I hope they catch whoever did it!

I saw yesterday in Wanstead Pie and Mash that they now sell very posh Salmon Mash and Liquor and Strawberries and cream for £5.50p the lot! What a bargain!

Hopefully all the gangs will stay where they are in the dreadful part of Leytonstone where the answer seems to be to knock down the estate and start again every few years, blaming poor housing. They knocked down the old Victorian Houses in the 60's, built the concrete jungle of Cathall Estate and this bred ferals so they knocked it down and built the Shoebox Estate, probably sponsored by Ikea as that is the only furniture you can get in there flat pack.

It really is scary there after dark with shrouded hoodlums haunting the area in packs, chicken shops the magnets like moths to a light.

Unfortunately, too many young men are caught up in the 'ghetto player' culture. I really thought that the election of Barrack Obama would inspire young black men to set their sights higher than just being a gang member.

The Police need to be more pro-active in the Cann Hall area. The majority of Cann Hall residents are absolutely petrified to leave their homes after dark and would wholeheartedly welcome more of a Police presence in the area - not just after a stabbing.

Ha ha, the police response in the wake of stabbings and shootings in and around the area (including a machine gun attack on the police) was ....................
.........
to close and board up the station!

Er, no we're not. The Cann Hall area is a decent place to live. Chichester, Matcham, Cary, Woodhouse etc - all nice quiet streets. I know, I've lived there for about 7 years.

This atrocity happened in Cathall, which some residents are determined to turn into a little bit of South Central LA. If this victim was an innocent, I fell very sorry for him. As for the "gangsters", there's not many of then, so eventually they'll all kill each other. Let's hope its soon.

Yes, they did move. More than 5 (FIVE) years after the event. And they only moved up the road.
