IT is uncertain whether plans to make a town eco-friendly will now go ahead.
12 sites across the country were earmarked by the Government to become eco-towns, including Elsenham near Stansted.
But ministers have now said just one is suitable.
They said that every town must have at least 40 per cent of it's area as green space.
Elsenham was graded with a B rating along with nine other towns, meaning it faces certain obstacles to succeed in the transition.
Just one town, Rackheath, was given an A rating.
It is expected the final shortlist will be complete by the New Year.
Eco-towns are expected to achieve a zero carbon status in all of the buildings.
