CHINGFORD: Anger at cells extension
TEMPORARY cells behind Chingford Police Station will remain in operation until November 2012, to the fury of local residents.
The cells, which have been in use since since November 2000, have been needed because of shortage of cell space in the borough.
Permission for the 10 cells has now expired, and the Met Police Authority applied for permission for them to be used until November 1.
The cells are to be used as a stop-gap until the new custody suite planned for Hainault Road, Leyton, is built.
People living close to the site have complained that retaining the temporary cells will lead to increased noise and disturbance and an increased demand for on-street parking.,
But councillors decided unanimoulsy voted in favour of the scheme.
