CHIGWELL: Council fails to net tennis scheme for district

A PROPOSAL which would have seen the county's first high-performance centre for junior tennis built in Chigwell has been turned down by councillors due to a lack of details.

Old Chigwellian's Sports Club, off Roding Lane, had hoped to gain permission to build a centre housing four indoor tennis courts to promote tennis excellence in the area.

Speaking for the agent of the applicant, WIMX Junior Tennis Academy, Ms Ward told the district council's planning committee that, if built, the centre could attract up to £100,000 in financial assistance to help with tennis coaching.

She added: "We will provide a juniors' tennis centre with hardly any membership fees. We'll be trying to satisfy the Lawn Tennis Association's criteria for having a high performance centre. For a big county like Essex it's a real shame we don't have a high performance centre."

She said mini-buses could be laid on to take local school children to the centre.

Councillor John Knapman said: "At the moment if you're a high performing young tennis player in Essex you will have to go to Milton Keynes or Bromley to get the kind of coaching which will advance you. That seems to me to be absolutely scandalous.

"We keep saying young people have got nothing to do. Children need to be given sports activities."

Other councillors voiced concern that the proposed project would be in the green belt and also pointed to officers' worries that the club had no links with local school or council tennis schemes.

Councillor Mitch Cohen said: "I'd like to see far more detail bolted in."
