CHIGWELL: Man seriously injured in road collision 'explosion'
A HEAD-ON crash in Chigwell this morning has left a Loughton man in a serious condition in hospital.
A green Nissan Sunny and gold Renault Clio collided in Pudding Lane at 6.20am with the Nissan bursting into flames.
The Nissan driver, a 60-year-old Loughton man, was taken by ambulance to Whipps Cross Hospital, Leytonstone, with serious injuries, and has now been transferred to Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel.
The other driver, an 18-year-old man from Dagenham, was taken by ambulance to an undisclosed hospital with slight injuries, and has now been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
The incident occurred about 40 yards from the home of eyewitness Colin Evans.
He said: "We heard a massive impact, looked out and saw the flames. The car was a massive ball of flame which kept exploding. It was quite spectacular. Our wooden fence has gone up in flames and the hedge has gone as well.
"The person looked badly injured. I saw him lying in the road being resuscitated."
Mr Evans, who has lived in Pudding Lane over 32 years, describes the area as a "complete rat run" and the scene of several major collisions.
He said: "We've been trying for years to get something done. It's been going on for so long.
"We've had considerable discussion with the council about traffic measures. There's various ways of doing it. We want the road closed altogether. It was actually on the books at one point."
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Chigwell Road Policing unit on 01279 621866.
