Children from primary schools in Borehamwood, Shenley and Elstree are set to join around 56,000 youngsters in the county taking to the streets for Walk to School Week.

Starting on Monday, the national scheme encourages pupils to explore the environment through sound and to find out how many noisy experiences they usually miss while travelling in cars.

They will be asked to become 'sound detectives' and keep diaries detailing all the sounds they hear on the way to and from school.

As part of the week's activities, Hertfordshire County Council will run a music-related competition for pupils, based on their journeys.

County councillor Stuart Pile, executive member for highways, transport and rural affairs, said: "Walk to School Week is a great way for children to become more aware of their surroundings as they travel, taking in the sights and sounds around them as they walk.

"Encouraging children to walk also helps them keep fit, while reducing the number of cars on the roads and emissions produced.

there should be more schools taking part in this walk to school week my kids walk to school every day but for some reason their school hasnt taken part..
