New commander takes control at Borehamwood Fire Station
 |
| Ready for action: Station Commander Mark Cheshire |
An experienced firefighter is settling into life as the new station commander of Borehamwood Fire Station.
Station Commander Mark Cheshire, who has worked with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) for 29 years, took up the role at the Elstree Way station on May 1.
He had previously been working as a retained support officer for St Albans and Hertsmere.
His predecessor, Paul McDonald, moved in the opposite direction and will now work as a retained support officer in the borough.
During his career, Mr Cheshire has worked as a station officer at Hemel Hempstead, Watford and Rickmansworth fire stations and also previously held a role working in Fire Safety Enforcement in Watford.
He said: "I'm pleased to be working at Borehamwood. I have inherited a very good team of professional firefighters who are committed to the safety of residents in the area.
"The previous station commander worked tirelessly to keep the community safe from fire, and I hope to maintain his high standard of fire prevention."
Following two blazes at homes in Shenley and Radlett earlier this week, Mr Cheshire urged residents to book a free fire safety check: "Firefighters can come to your house and give tailored fire safety advice and fit smoke alarms for free, as part of the home fire safety check initiative.
"I would strongly urge people to get in touch with us to book an appointment."
Welcoming the new commander, county councillor Richard Smith, executive member for community safety, said: "After nearly 30 years with HFRS, Mark has a lot of experience to bring to the station.
"It is clear that he is keen to encourage local residents to become safer in their homes and I am sure both Mark and his team will be happy to share their expertise."
Mr Cheshire said he hoped to continue partnership work with other borough organisations to keep Borehamwood and the surrounding area safe.
