A YEAR of birthday celebrations began in style as Welling school hired an old London bus to transport everyone around the town.

St Michael's CofE Primary School in Wrotham Road kicked off its 70th birthday year with a ceremony to mark the opening of its £700,000 remodelled building, which includes larger classrooms and a new kitchen and dining hall.

The 70-year-old bus, from the London Bus Preservation Trust, called at the civic offices in Bexleyheath Broadway to pick up Bexley's mayor, Councillor Nigel Betts, and take him to the school for the ceremony.

He was joined by former Bexley councillor Jean Antenbring and the Bishop of Woolwich, the Right Rev Christopher Chessun, who conducted the dedication service.

And after the formalities, which included lunch cooked in the new kitchen, every class got the chance of a ride around Welling on the bus.
