THE murder of teenager Jimmy Mizzen highlights "unacceptable" levels of crime, says the London Assembly member for Greenwich and Lewisham.
Len Duvall said the "senseless murder" of the 16-year-old in Lee at the weekend sent out a message to the mayor and police that there is still a lot of work to do.
The chairman of the Met Police Authority's comments were made in a speech to welcome 23 members of the MPA, responsible for overseeing the policing of London - announced yesterday by Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
Among the seven new appointments to the MPA is James Cleverly - elected on May 1 as assembly member for Bexley and Bromley.
Mr Duvall, serving his third term as an assembly member, said: "We have worked with the Mayor of London, the commissioner and others to achieve a great deal over the past few years - not least the biggest increase in police numbers in the history of the Met, and the rollout of police and PCSO teams across every ward in London.
"But there is still much to do, as has been clearly demonstrated over the weekend with the senseless murder of yet another teenager.
"This is clearly unacceptable, and we will work with the new mayor, commissioner and many others to bring about even greater improvements in order to make our streets safer."
The appointments, announced yesterday, will run until September 30.
From October 1 new powers will allow Mr Johnson to appoint a new chairman of the authority or take up the role himself.

To alot of people there is! But then if you look at today's world you can see that this everyday part of life unfortunately! But it is really unacceptable! Let's hope that Boris will clamp down on all this disgracefulness of today's life!!

There will always be crime mate, no way can you eradicate it completely.
If you check the MET website for crime stats both robbery and violent crime seem to be rising in the worst areas despite some things going down.
Strange how crime is on the increase, does it not tie in with the increase in immigration? Strange coincidence that.

Let's get real: immigrants do commit crimes and those who do should be deported no questions asked, but most foreigners are good for London and the UK. The vast majority of them obey the law, pay taxes and contribute to the upkeep of our very own home grown white trash.

Violent crime and general anti social crime, has been on the increase for the past decade.It has always been there, but with the media feeding this ( films and tv that feed teenagers and some adults)messages that condone, anti social behavior, it will only get worse.

The only good thing that came from the awfull killing of Buster was that the killers Dad made him return and pay for the crime he commited.

My guess is, the killers Father had been given some sort of incentive to make sure his son returned back to answer for himself. I was gonna say to come back and face the Justice, but these days we know that there isn't any!

I think all shops should have metal detector type scanners in their doors to detect kids with knives.

What good would metal decters in shops be!! It would just mean that they would go in do what that needed to do and leave it on the streets! Not only that if one of the metal decters did go off then it would be up to a shop keeper with no experience to tackle the situation resulting in more harm than good me thinks! I manage a shop and I certainly wouldnt want to have to tackle a child who had a weapon on him Id rather not no about it!!

Also because of the public outrage that this could happen to a promising young, white man who has had his future stolen and his family, friends and community crushed with devastation!
This tragedy would be made all the more worse if Jimmy was of an ethnic minority. I am confident that it would be swept beneath the carpet, kept low key and any evidence, bound to be shoddily attained, would not hold up in court. The family and friends of Jimmy can take heart at least that some justice will be meted out!

I am sorry to see that you are a mother of a victim, but unfortunatlly with all the knife crime in our society at this present time, ethnic murders are usually put down to being "gang related".
I'm not saying this is a fact, or true, but as soon as someone of an ethnic religion has died all posts are marked as gang related.

These figures show that the knife and gun crime disproportionally happening in the black community (Jamaican)in London is really just a natural phenomenon. It may seem extraordinary to other communities but is the norm for black communities in Jamaica, USA and Canada

I didnt know Mr and Mrs Mizens nor did I know Jimmy. I listened to Jimmys brother on the jeremy Vine show on the 13th May and was in tears, Nothing I can say or do could bring jimmy back to you but you have your faith and such an abundance of love for each other that you will get through it be content that you had Jimmy for 16 short years and remeber all the good times, MY heart goes out to you I am not sure I could show so much forgiveness if anyone hurt my children who are now 28 and 31

What exactly are you going to do about it Mr Duvall? There has already been a marked increase in youth deaths this year in comparison to last years figures and we are only in May!! You need to get in the real world and actively work to reduce these figures.
