Dance music fans got celebrations under way at Radio 1's Big Weekend festival as the first acts took to the stage.

A host of top DJs kick-started the festival with an outdoor party in Glasgow's George Square, with Pete Tong, Tiesto, Danny Howard and Martin Garrix all performing to the 14,000-strong crowd.

One Direction will open the main weekend-long event in Glasgow Green today.

Up to 50,000 revellers will attend the festival today and tomorrow to watch a line-up including, Katy Perry, Kings of Leon, Coldplay and Bastille.

Calvin Harris, Pharrell, Jake Bugg, Lily Allen and Ed Sheeran will also perform today.

Pete Tong said: "It's always a great thrill and great honour. I don't think we've ever gone on a full-out manner on a Friday for the dance and electronic DJs.

"It's good and nice to be able to do it in the middle of the city. Usually the history of BBC Radio 1 Weekends have been on the outskirts in a field somewhere. It's unique. We won't forget this one.

"Glasgow crowds have always been noisy, that's never changed from the days of the rave scene.

"Seeing Calvin (Harris) will be special. I'm sure there will be an incredible reaction."

Kings of Leon, The Vamps, John Newman, Rita Ora, The 1975, Tinie Tempah and Paolo Nutini will all perform on the Sunday, with Perry closing the festival.
