Crystal, Ryan reunite for Reiner

This Is Local London: Rob Reiner was honoured with the Chaplin Award Rob Reiner was honoured with the Chaplin Award

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan reunited 25 years after their film When Harry Met Sally to honour its director Rob Reiner.

The pair, who played friends turned lovers in the hit 1989 romantic comedy, were both on hand to see Rob pick up the Film Society of Lincoln Centre's Chaplin Award in New York.

Variety reported that Meg, 52, and Billy, 66, took a trip down memory lane when they appeared on stage, discussing the film's fake orgasm scene. They revealed that director Rob actually demonstrated the scene to help the actress perfect it.

The film's cinematographer, Barry Sonnenfeld, later said shooting the scene at Katz's Deli was "the worst day of Rob Reiner's life".

"I've never seen a man have such an active display of panic and depression," he said. "Rob was sweating so much that he had to wear a Katz's dishtowel over his head. He made Albert Brooks' sweat scene in Broadcast News seem like Albert was calm and collected. He kept turning to me and saying, 'What was I thinking? I'm directing a woman on how to fake an orgasm in front of my mother (who was an extra in the scene)'."

Meg and Billy also discussed what they thought their characters would be doing now.

"Sometimes people want to know what happened to Harry and Sally and I think they are OK," Meg said.

They agreed Harry would still be a political consultant and working for New York's Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Other stars who turned up to honour the director included James Caan, Michael Douglas and Martin Scorsese. Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman sent video messages.

Clips of the director's work were played and the audience was treated to exclusive peeks of his upcoming documentary The Case Against 8, about the effort to overturn California's Proposition 8 and his new film And So It Goes.
