Emma Watson has revealed that seeing the huge ark on the Noah set helped her performance.

The former Harry Potter star, who plays Noah's adopted daughter Ila in Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic, praised the director's choice to build a life-sized ark for the shoot.

"It was literally made to the biblical proportions. Honestly, the first time I saw it, it was just breath-taking," she said.

"But I think it really grounded all our performances because it gave us an idea of the scope. It's also a very utilitarian symbol, which I think as well thematically also helped us with the story. We got the sense of this coffin-like ark, which sets a very different tone than the kind of pretty boat with the bow and the giraffes' head sticking out the top and everything."

The 23-year-old continued: "It was really great to have that physically there in person."

Her co-star Douglas Booth, who plays her screen love interest Shem, added: "It really helped us as actors. Darren built the ark and it was absolutely huge. They were releasing 5,000 gallons of water on our heads a minute, so it was full on and physical."

Emma put her complete trust in filmmaker Darren, with his controversial interpretation of the tale.

"Darren Aronofsky is a name that is so respected and he's such an intelligent filmmaker, I just kind of immediately trusted him with the subject matter," she said.

"I just felt confident that he'd do a great job with it and that he would be really sensitive with it. I love that it's got other people talking. It's kind of amazing to be part of a film that has got people talking. It's really cool."

:: Noah opens in cinemas on April 4.
