Kylie Minogue has revealed that she enjoyed "losing" herself to music.

The Australian singer admitted making her new album Kiss Me Once was cathartic as it gave her something to focus on, after her split with Spanish model Andres Velencoso last October.

"It was therapeutic. It's a good distraction so it's good to get to the studio and focus," she said.

" Time changes when you're in the studio - I don't even check my phone because I'm so in the zone - so it's definitely a good way of dealing with your emotions. Your voice is one of the ways your emotions come out so to either release that or to express that is a good feeling."

Kylie's new album, her first with Jay Z's label Roc Nation, is out now, and features collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Sia and Enrique Iglesias.

"I tried a lot of things with this album that you won't hear, because some of them just didn't work. But I have a curious nature and there were songs I would instinctively feel that's not for me... but I could be wrong so let's try it," she said.

"I recorded a lot of songs with different people and I'm happy to expose myself to new environments and new energies. I worked with The-Dream on a track called Skirt, which was released as a buzz track and sounds good live. That's a bit out of my world but it was really fun to inhabit that world for a bit."

She added: "I tried many styles for the combination and the amalgamation of what became Kiss Me Once."

The 45-year-old also joked she wasn't tempted to turn herself into a rap star.

"I know I'm signed with Roc Nation but I wasn't doing my 8 Mile rap showdown," she said.
