Kate Winslet 'overwhelmed' by star

This Is Local London: Kate Winslet was overwhelmed by her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Kate Winslet was overwhelmed by her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Kate Winslet joked about the impressive turn out as she was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Oscar-winning actress, making her first post-baby appearance since giving birth to son Bear in December, was presented with the 2,520th star, just hours after an earthquake hit Los Angeles.

"I'm completely overwhelmed by the number of people that there are here today. I honestly had no idea this was going to be such a well-attended event especially after the earthquake this morning, which frightened me quite a lot," she said.

Kate, who showed off her post-baby figure in a fitted black dress, also made fun about keeping hold of her breast pump during the tremors, saying: "I made for the door frame with my breast pump in my hand."

The 38-year-old actress, who finally won an Oscar for her performance in The Reader in 2009 after being nominated six times, thanked "all the actors and directors" she has worked with.

"I really want to share this with those people and the history I have with those individuals that have taught me so much, and continue to teach me so much," she continued.

"That's the great thing about acting - it's such a privilege to be in a position to work with such wonderful people. Not only that, to continue to learn on the job, there really is no rulebook and no great teacher who can tell you how to do this, and it's a very frightening profession to be in sometimes."

Kate was joined by Titanic co-star Kathy Bates and Divergent co-star Shailene Woodley, who described the actress as her "idol", at the event.

"I'm very struck seeing Kathy here. Titanic was 18-years-ago. Would you believe that?" Kate said.

"I had my 21st birthday on that film shoot, I'm 38 now. It's really wonderful to be here and to be given this award, this accolade, this wonderful moment in my life that I know I will never forget. Thank you very much for my star, and for having me."

Kathy p resented Kate with a bag of gifts including a "Lucille Ball apron", rubber gloves and a rose knee-pad "to look after her star."

"You deserve to have stars strewn at your feet," she said.

"Even though stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame sometimes get a little dirty with a little poo or whatever, what will last is your wonderful beautiful films, characters that you've played that have stolen our hearts. Nobody can ever poo on those."
