Lily Allen also caught the eye - but for different reasons - in an orange and pink creation complete with feathers in her hair.

There was a lot of conservative looking outfits with names including Uma Thurman, Cate Blanchett and Amy Adams all going for dark colours - with the latter in a sweeping Victoria Beckham gown.

One star who did stand out was Ruth Wilson who wore a silver trouser suit - for the most practical of reasons.

She said: "It usually rains and it's cold and I thought I'm going to keep warm tonight. And shiny, because it's a sparkly night right?"
