Shia LaBeouf has raised eyebrows by appearing at the premiere of his new film Nymphomaniac with a paper bag over his head.

The US actor - who recently declared he was retiring from public life following a series of bizarre outbursts - had written the words "I'm not famous anymore" on the bag, which he wore on the red carpet as the movie was screened at the Berlin Film Festival.

The actor has been tweeting the same sentence every day since the middle of January.

Earlier, Shia stormed out of a press conference for the movie after answering just one question.

The 27-year-old turned up to the event looking unkempt and apparently missing a tooth.

When asked a question about the sex scenes in director Lars von Trier's erotic film, he replied: "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea," before saying thank you and leaving.

Shia was quoting French footballer Eric Cantona, who was mocked after using the same cryptic line in 1995.

His co-stars Christian Slater and Uma Thurman later laughed about Shia's comments, joking that the script did contain a lot of sardines.

His latest antics come after he was embroiled in a plagiarism controversy, which started after it emerged he had copied graphic novelist Daniel Clowes' work in a short film without crediting him for his work.

Shia later apologised in a long series of tweets and even hired a plane to sky-write "I'm sorry Daniel Clowes".

And earlier this month Shia was in the headlines again when it was reported that he refused to shower for weeks on the set of his Second World War drama Fury. The Transformers actor was so determined to get fully into character as a soldier in the trenches that he stopped washing and even yanked out his own tooth, reported the Mail On Sunday.
