This Is Local London: Cobie Smulders featured in the latest episode of How I Met Your Mother Cobie Smulders featured in the latest episode of How I Met Your Mother

The creators of US sitcom How I Met Your Mother have apologised for offending viewers with an episode which was criticised as racist.

Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment In Slapmarra, featured some of the cast dressed in Asian costumes, complete with make-up and accents which sparked criticism on Twitter, leading to the hashtag #HowIMetYourRacism.

Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan were accused of using "yellowface" - using make-up to make white actors appear more East Asian - the BBC's Newsbeat reported.

Creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have now apologised for the episode, which aired on CBS on January 13 and was partly set in China.

They told fans on Twitter: "Hey guys, sorry this took so long. @himymcraig and I want to say a few words about #HowIMetYourRacism.

"With Monday's episode, we set out to make a silly and unabashedly immature homage to Kung Fu movies, a genre we've always loved.

"But along the way we offended people. We're deeply sorry, and we're grateful to everyone who spoke up to make us aware of it.

"We try to make a show that's universal, that anyone can watch and enjoy. We fell short of that this week, and feel terrible about it.

"To everyone we offended, I hope we can regain your friendship, and end this series on a note of goodwill."
