Chiwetel Ejiofor has revealed nothing can top his excitement over new film 12 Years A Slave - not even the awards buzz the film has received.

The 36-year-old Brit plays Solomon North, a free man abducted and sold into slavery, in Steve McQueen's latest movie, which screened at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday.

"I'm so excited to be here and have this film come out," he said from the red carpet.

"I love the film, I think's it's a beautiful film and I think Steve McQueen has done a beautiful job."

He added: "I'm already at a ten, everything else is just gravy."

12 Years a Slave also stars Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and Brad Pitt, who produced the film.

And Brad said that while the movie highlights a dark period in American history, its message is more upbeat.

"The film has difficult moments and certainly details man's inhumanity, man's ability to be cruel to one another," he said.

"But ultimately what the story's about is a reminder of out responsibility to each other, that we're all equal and after the same thing."
