Alan Dickens has been appointed head coach of Derby RFC, the club he played for as a six-year-old.

The scrum-half, who departed Saracens earlier this month, will lead the club in Midlands Two East next season while trying to nail down a regular starting place with Premiership returnees Northampton Saints.

His late father John enjoyed a long association with the Haslams outfit and Dickens is relishing the challenge as he takes his first step on the coaching ladder.

"Coaching is something I have always had an eye on doing when I eventually finish playing professionally," said the 32-year-old. "And I don't think there is anywhere better to begin than the club I started playing for when I was six-years-old."
