Croydon's unbeaten welter-weight prospect Chas Symonds will take another step toward stardom next month when his eighth professional fight is televised on Sky Sports.

The 22-year-old from Stroud Green Way, made it seven wins earlier last month when he stylishly became the first fighter to knock out Tooting's Dave Wakefield at the York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Now his promoter Eugene Maloney has done a deal with Frank Warren allowing Symonds to fight an unnamed opponent on the undercard of the Matt Skelton-Michael Sprott British heavyweight title bout in Reading on Saturday, April 24.

The former Edenham High School pupil's exciting style has already seen him picked out as "one to watch" by Sky Sports pundits on their Ringside programme, and now he has a further chance to gain national prominence on a big show. Having earned the nickname Bomber in the amateur ranks, Symonds will be looking to add to his two knock outs in seven pro fights.

He told the Guardian: "I am getting known slowly but I need to have television coverage, so this is a fantastic chance for me. The opponent has yet to be confirmed but it will be an even match against an up and coming fighter. They don't put easy fights on Sky, so it will be a good test for me."

If he comes through the televised test unscathed, Maloney wants Symonds back in the ring just two weeks later at the York Hall on May 7, before challenging for the British Masters title later this year.

Chas said: "Eugene said if I come through these next two fights, he'll put me forward for a British Masters title shot."

Thanks to the help of local sponsor Mark Edmond's Mobile Media Promotions, Symonds has recently been able to quit his job as a scaffolder to concentrate on boxing full time.

He added: "My career is starting to take off, and now I can concentrate on my boxing full-time. I want to go all the way to the top."
