MARLOW'S Dan Tipney and Adam Pennock warmed up for the junior World Championships qualifications with victory at Henley Regatta at the weekend.

And the fours' win in the Fawley Cup also saw Henley Rowing Club receive their first medal in more than 100 years when Boulter End's David Read helped row the composite crew to victory.

Read, 18, Tipney, 17, and Pennock, 17, were joined by Zac Purchase from King's School, Worcester.

They trounced the opposition over four days of racing, beating Malvern Preparatory School from USA easily in the final.

Their hardest round was in the semis when they took on Anglia CGS/ St Jospehs A from Australia, who had seen off a crew of Great Britian internationals in the previous round.

The Marlow boat was quickest off the mark and established an early lead by the barrier.

From there Marlow continued to move away and by the finish had a comfortable win by three lengths.

Tipney and Pennock are now looking forward to the qualifications for the junior World Championships in Athens after an excellent row.

Tipney said: "All these years, I've been coming to Henley and wondering what it was like to win and now I've won.

"Winning at Henley doesn't make you the best but there's something about Henley.

"The way they've kept the traditions and kept it like it always has been makes it incredible.

"The crowd are brilliant and it's an amazing atmosphere."

Meanwhile, Marlow Men's squad also had a good Henley, prequalifying in the men's quad sculls event and progressing through a round before the team – Jonni Logan, Mark Ruinet, John Tetley and bow man Andy Barron – lost out to a strong crew of Great Britain Internationals, incluing Olympic champion Greg Searle.

Also competing for Marlow was Emily Booker in the women's single sculls but she lost out in a good race to fellow England lightweight Norris by two lengths.
