Hornets in last chance saloon

Watford are ready for their biggest game of the season as they attempt to pull off a famous comeback at Hull City tonight.

The Hornets will have to overturn a 2-0 deficit at the KC stadium if they are to keep their promotion hopes alive. But Watford are boosted by both the return of Darius Henderson after suspension and John Eustace's availability. The skipper was sent off at Vicarage Road at the weekend but the decision was overturned yesterday.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd remains confident Watford can rediscover their best form and book a place at Wembley in the play-off final on May 24.

Boothroyd said: "Without doubt this is the biggest game for the club and it's a privileged position to be in.

"It is a massive double fixture and I am relishing going up there. We can go and give it our all and so long as we come off the pitch knowing we gave it our very best, then that will do me."

Watford are likely to be without Dan Shittu, as the centre-back has a hamstring problem, so Jay DeMerit is expected to replace him. Henderson should return to the starting lineup and may come in for Lionel Ainsworth who earned a rare start on Sunday.

Boothroyd believes the pressure will be on Phil Brown's side with no-one expecting them to slip up. And the Watford boss hopes his team can use it to their advantage and spring an upset.

"It is different being expected to win the match and not expected and we are the latter," Boothroyd said.

"We have been to the KC Stadium and won and lost, so we know what it's like to do both. But we are playing with a different mentality now because we have nothing to lose.

"If we don't win we're out and the season's over so we're playing to keep our season alive."

Trouble is I cannot see us keeping a clean sheet so will have to score 3 at best...which is unlikely.

Lets make an effort of it though rather than whimp out.

Lets not all be negative today, 3-0 to the ORNS, COME ON!!!

1st goal crucial, if its them its goodnight, if its us then we have a sniff. I did notice Phil Brown really urging them for a 3rd to kill the tie on Sunday because he knew everything was going their way in that game and knows it won't happen like that again. From what i saw there is nothing Hull have that should make our lot feel inferior so bring it on.

The watford team that turned up last sunday is the team I love. We showed passion and ability and character...just need more of the same up in Hull tonight.
Thanks to Aidy and the boys for giving me at least one more game this season to get stressed, drink too much, cheer, moan but most of all get excited about. This is my Watford and I love it.

I always remember you beating Southampton 7 - 1 in 1980 after losing the 1st leg and nobody giving us a chance... come on you orns!

As long as we play football the proper way like Sunday then we have a chance. Id rather watch a season with that style of play than what we had before. What worries me though is we havent scored in the last 4 home games - at least we looked a threat on Sunday though. Priskin should start if we play the same style.
Posted by: mikewatford, Essex on 10:31am Wed 14 May 08
Even taking into account the heat on Sunday Hull looked very tired towards the end - we did not. Extra time might suit us?
Given Mr. Brown's jumping up and down on our pitch when they scored, striding about arrogantly in his suit, hands in pocket and constantly berating the fourth official it would be nice to take him down a peg or two. I just hope it doesn't degenerate into a brawl - there's a massive amount at stake and there are some scores to settle now.
Come on!

Will bringing back Henderson lead to Route 1 again???
Posted by: stevemag, Windsor on 11:00am Wed 14 May 08
Please no Henderson he can't hit a barn door. Mind you he might just be more alert than Ellington and therefore should be able to slot home a trademark goal from 5 yards.

I think we should start with the team we started with on Sat, Ainsworth looked lively in the first half. We can bring Hendo on second half if need be, and thus change the style if necessary. It actually gives us a plan B, something we don't appear to have had all season.
If he does play Hendo from the start I just pray we don't revert to the old launch and hope style we've seen over the last few months.
C'mon you Golden Boys!

4-1 tonight aet! P.Brown and his tigggrs will be not be jumping up and down and running on the pitch come 10.30 tonight. Ashbee will get a **** good spanking from JE. Early goal from JDM and Ellington hat-trick! We can all dream cant we!?!
COME ON YOU 'ORNS!!!
Posted by: RichardW, Worcester on 12:14pm Wed 14 May 08
Don't get yourselves too excited, folks. The KC will be a cauldron, with all the home tickets sold out. Here's a few facts to calm you down:

Hull have only lost once at home in the league since 2 October and that was against West Brom. That was also the only home league match this season where we lost by more than a single goal. We've only conceded a total of 5 goals in our last 9 matches at the KC.

Still, upsets do happen. Whatever the result, I hope those of you that make the trip to East Yorkshire enjoy the experience.

Whether we go to wembley or not, at least there is one good thing to come out of this years playoffs. Palace's chairman and his hairdresser will not be near the place!!
Good luck and well done to old WFC boys G.Johnson and his son!!
Team for tonight:- Drop the keeper and put our highly paid international(?) one in, and play 3-4-2-1.

Tactics:-
Pass to each other-we will probably be playing in a red kit.

There you go boofers, just need you to motivate them now!

We must go up there and continue to play sunday's style of football whether hendo plays or not.

If we revert to the tactics of the previous months we wont have a chance and Aidy should be charged with negligence and impersonating a football manager.

However I have faith in him and the team to give good a good account of themselves and it may be an interesting final scoreline...no predictions but a feeling that we are owed some justice after sunday and hull's cheating captain and bullshit manager will get what is coming to them.

I am about to leave home to head off to hull.

I do belive that we have a chance but a slim one at that.

If by some chance we can get an early goal then you never know. Hull will be very nervous then.

They got all the luck and decisions on Sun so its our turn that lady luck comes our way.

I think in a way the pressure is off us. we are not expoected to win so we have nothing to loose.

I just hope we go out there and give it our best shot and you never know! come 10.30 i hope we are celebrating and we wipe the smiles off their arrogant manager and fans. Come on!!!!!

There is not a hope in hell of us winning 3-0 or 3-1 at Hull tonight, not a chance. We have been simply awful recently. I'm not saying however that I wouldn't like to see us win! Come on Watford!

Be an awful shame if Bryan Hughes (ex-Brum from '99) takes another play-off pen against Watford and it gets saved to let us through to Wembley....

Perhaps we should send a message on behalf of AB to our old mate Warnock -
'Keep your chins up'.

And for those that aren't actually travelling to Hull but are instead planning to catch the game on Sky - don't forget, you can turn over and watch The Apprentice at nine...

Jay demerit & Graham simpson both interviewed on radio, and both were asked why, with the good young players we have, and the fact that must all want to play football on the deck,do we persist in the long ball which doesn,t work in this modern age of football..
And both said, they would love to see it on the ground, but if the manager felt the type of football we currently would bring us the best results, then you have to allow him to try, although there were major pauses before answering...
When asked if aidy would be at watford next season, his reply was that clubs should have continuity, which you don,t get by changing staff every minute,so of course he will here...
Total agreement, but MR SIMPSON..Please threaten him with the sack if he doesn,t keep it on the deck...
3-0 and i,ll go to church every sunday,or even wear d**k head browns suit for a whole day...

If we get through maybe we should all paint our faces orange and wear too much hair gel at Wembley, and of course never stay in our seats!
As for the comments by DeMerit and Simpson-interesting.
...and not altogether surprising! Still think AB should remain but he shouldn't be untouchable, nobody in the club should. I want to see a change of style next season regardless of division and also a change of a few personnel. Still, I am off shortly to sit with beers and short fingernails in front of the TV with the smallest hope of a miracle!!

What twaddle. Cant score, cant keep a clean sheet, yeah we stand a great chance.

Who cares if Henderson and Useless are playing, they are both a crock of ****.

This season has been an unacceptable failure...Hull had nowhere near the budget we had...as far as i'm concerned it should be last chance saloon for Boothroyd...he is pathetically inept.

BOOTHROYD OUT BOOTHROYD OUT BOOTHROYD OUT BOOTHROYD OUT!!!!!

Wake up clappers it ain't happening....3-0 Hull...oh and relegation next season as part of Gimpsons plan b.

Oh shut up spider boy you pretentious nonce. Anyway you were way off the mark regarding the hobgoblin. Any serious spiderman fan will know that there were two green goblins who were succeeded by the Hobgoblin...whose true identity was never discovered i might add.

As for your remarks, yes i'm just like doc oc, i like playing with all my testicles.

All the chanting and blind faith in the world will not inspire this shower to victory, but defeat is not a bad thing, in fact its exactly what this club needs at the moment.

Now why don't you shove that big apple in your mouth and shut it boy!
