West Essex and Woolston Manor wow first round of Thornton Cup

GOLF

WEST ESSEX and Woolston Manor were the two outstanding teams in the first round of the Thornton Cup.

A number of local sides were involved in the competition but it was West Essex, who defeated Bush Hill Park by 12 points, and Woolston, who beat Theydon Bois by the same margin, who stood out.

Indeed, they were the only two of only three local sides in action who made it through to the second round, with Wanstead receiving a bye against Weald Park.

Abridge were the other successful team, defeating rivals Epping 11-4 in their tie, to set up a second round match against Bishop Stortford.

Chigwell were unfortunate not to make it to the next round of games as they drew at Orsett, only for the hosts to win on playback.

Royal Epping Forest narrowly lost out to Bentley by two points, while North Weald went down 9-6 to Channels.

Nazeing pushed Hainault close before falling at the final hurdle and Toot Hill lost 10-5 to Muswell Hill, while Woodford suffered a heavy 12-3 defeat at the hands of Colne Valley.

West Essex will face Canons Brook on their own patch and Woolston Manor will play host to The Lords (Rayleigh), while Wanstead will travel to Crondon Park.
