Sutton skipper Keith Medlycott has labelled Farnham a "farm wicket" and the worst he has seen in 20 years.

The Surrey Championship Premier Division champions slumped to 54-run defeat - even though Phil Sampson took 9-31 as the home side were bowled out for 118 inside 40 overs.

Sutton's stellar batting line-up - including opener John Fry, who passed 10,000 championship runs last week - capitulated to 64 all out in reply.

Medlycott said: "They managed to put together one decent partnership, which won them the game.

"It says something when the guy who takes nine wickets tells you he didn't enjoy the game at all.

"For me, it was the least enjoyable game of cricket ever. I would rather give up the game altogether than play on that again and I almost did.

"It was like a fifth team game and I am not prepared to play that level."

Sampson, 27, who has given up professional cricket to study for a sports science degree at Roehampton, was just as scathing.

"I'd rather get no wickets and win, than get nine wickets and lose," said Sampson.

"It was quite a weird experience because you can't really celebrate if you lose."

Sutton host mid-table Dulwich on Saturday looking for a win that could put them back in the title race behind leaders Reigate Priory and Cobham Avorians.

"We are not playing badly - we are just doing it in fits and starts," said Medlycott.

"The club's other teams won which is a good sign. One win could easily put us back to second with a long way still to go."
