Ainsworth still in the dark over manager's post

GARETH Ainsworth says he's no closer to knowing whether he'll land the Wanderers job on a permanent basis - but thinks he has a chance thanks to his players.

The optimism that was missing earlier in the season is now back amongst Blues fans after an improvement in results and performances.

It's given supporters the belief their side's caretaker manager is the right man to take the job full time - but Ainsworth himself is still in the dark as to what his future holds.

He hasn't discussed with joint chairmen Ivor Beeks or Don Woodward whether he'll get the job despite a conversation after Tuesday night's famous cup win over Portsmouth.

Ainsworth said: "The chairman sent his congratulations message to me and said brilliant, great stuff, and to keep it going. That's about it for now.

"There was never a set date [for when Wanderers would appoint a permanent successor to Gary Waddock] and I respect that from the board. Hopefully they respect what I'm doing on my side of the situation. What will be will be.

"I've made no secret I would love to be the manager. The lads have been fantastic for me and given me half a chance of getting it.

"I respect the chairman and the Trust. I know Wycombe have been through a big change. They've got a big job on here and they want everything to be right, so all I can do is keep the ship going in the right direction that I think we are going in at the moment."

And Ainsworth has promised there's more to come from the side as they bid to climb away from the foot of the League Two table.

The 39-year-old said: "There's still time to get everything how I want it to be. It will still take a little bit more time to get everything in place. I've got some good ideas - when the time's right I will put them in place and take Wycombe forward.

"I don't think I can ever say 'that's enough'. You can't just think, 'That's it, we've cracked it', there's always work to do.

"I've never been shy of hard work."
