MILLWALL’S 2-1 victory over Bolton on Saturday has been overshadowed after Wanderers striker Marvin Sordell claimed he had been subject to racist abuse from home supporters at The Den.

The 21-year-old, who was an unused substitute, went straight on Twitter after his side’s defeat to blast Lions supporters for allegedly hurling racist jibes at the striker and his fellow subs Chung-Yong Lee, Darren Pratley and Benik Afobe throughout the game.

A joint investigation was launched by Millwall and Bolton after Sordell’s tweets were made, although the Met say the player has yet to make a formal complaint.

Sordell wrote after the game: “Putting the match aside, its 2012 in England and people are still shouting racial abuse at a football game!? Shocking “Chungy, Pratts, Benik and I had all sorts of things said to us.

“The police were standing yards away and did nothing “Funniest thing is if I had come on and scored and gave them some back, I would be the one who got fined.”

However, Sordell’s allegations have annoyed large sections of Millwall’s support who fear their club’s name will now be dragged through the mud yet again.

Writing an open letter to Sordell on the Millwall Online North Stand Banter Forum, Nedwall posted: “How likely is it then that you and your fellow Bolton subs were subjected to racist abuse while the police and stewards stood by and did nothing?

“About as likely as Chris Eagles being able to score a penalty.

“And if you really had “all sorts of things” said to you, why did you not immediately complain to the police – they were after all only yards away – rather than saving it all up for Twitter?

“Footballers are not known for thinking before they tweet – ask Ashley Cole – but if you had done so it might have occurred to you that taking a cheap shot at Millwall, a club which in fact has done more than any other to kick out racism, you are not helping the fight against genuine racism but are in fact harming it.

“If a small club like ours has to divert time and resources defending ourselves against some spurious FA investigation caused by your pathetic little tweet, those resources will not be available for our community projects and everything else we do to combat racism.”

A statement released by Millwall FC on their official website said: “Millwall and Bolton Wanderers are investigating allegations made by Bolton player Marvin Sordell that he was subjected to racial abuse by an individual whilst warming up as a substitute during Saturday’s Championship clash at The Den.

“The two clubs remain determined to do everything in their power to ensure that racist behaviour will not be tolerated.

“We will be speaking to the police and the match officials on this matter but no further comment will be made until this process has been completed and the investigations have been concluded.”
