Cort: We had to stand up and be counted after recent losses

CHARLTON defender Leon Cort admits he and his team-mates knew they had to stand up and be counted prior to Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Blackpool.
The Addicks had lost at home to Watford ahead of their trip to the seaside, but Saturday’s win means Charlton now have successive away wins under their belt going into the international break.
And the defender revealed his side knew they were very close to getting it right.
He said: “Fair play to all the boys, we defended really well and Ricardo Fuller defended from the front.
“It was brilliant and to come away from a place like this with a 2-0 victory is really pleasing, especially with the players they have.
“We were unfortunate in our last couple of games.
“We probably should’ve beaten Blackburn last weekend but we drew that and we probably should’ve beaten Watford on Tuesday night.
“Everyone knows how the Championship is.
“You never know what’s going to happen one week to the next, so we couldn’t feel sorry for ourselves, we just had to get on with it and put on a show today.”
Cort added: “We can’t sit and feel sorry for ourselves because we’ll just get punished every week.
“We just have to stand up and be men and get on with it.
“Hopefully we can carry that on.
“We’ve got the international break now and it is horrible losing just before the international break, so it’s nice to get the win.”
Traditionally the 10-game mark of a season is the point whereby the first assessment is made of how the table could look come May.
Charlton have been in both the top three and bottom three since the campaign kicked off and are currently sitting in 15th position.
Cort insists the squad have made the move up from League One to the Championship quite well so far, despite a large proportion of them not having much experience of second tier football.
He said: “It’s a step for everybody, some of the players haven’t played in the Championship before and it’s a learning curve.
“It’s still early on in the season so hopefully by Christmas time, maybe before that, everyone will be settled and we can start kicking on.
“We’ve got Ricardo Fuller, Rob Hulse and myself but a lot of the lads are stepping up to plate even though they haven’t played at this level before.
“It doesn’t really show in my eyes, everyone is pulling their weight and they’re doing fine.”
