Millwall manager: We can't just rely on Hendo for goals

Henderson grabbed his fourth goal in three games by scoring both of Millwall’s strikes in today’s 2-1 Den win over Bolton, including a dramatic 90th minute winner.

And although delighted with his contribution, the Den chief admits he would be a lot happier if other team members chipped in more regularly.

Jackett said: “He has been scoring goals and got 19 last year.

“That’s half a dozen now so far this season so it is a good return.

“There were some big chances for Chris Wood today as well.

“Unfortunately they didn’t go in but he is a goal scorer and he will score.

“We can’t just rely on Darius for his goals, we must be working hard where Andy Keogh, Chris Wood, James Henry and Liam Trotter come into it.

“Also on top of that we have to have enough from the back where we can come up and score from set pieces as well to get our goals total up.”

They may not have scored today but Jackett was very impressed by the new central defensive partnership of on loan debutant Mark Beevers and stand in skipper Danny Shittu against the Trotters.

He said: “Defensively anyway we have had some problems and had a new pairing today at the back with Beevers making his debut and then Shittu, who came to us quite late and didn’t have a pre-season.

“He is looking very good and as captain is filling in for Paul Robinson.

“It was a big performance from him today against his old club.”

Jackett was also keen to praise the crowd for their contribution in today’s victory after back-to-back home defeats at the hands of Cardiff and Brighton.

The manager said: “I thought all of our front players had good opportunities and good chances but the highlight for me today was the relationship between the players and the crowd was there.

“We really did bring the crowd into play through our good play ourselves. We have to continue to do that and it is the key to a good home record.”

Bolton had the chance to go 2-1 in front just after the hour when they were awarded a penalty following a foul on Chris Eagles by Alan Dunne.

Eagles had scored the visitors’ equaliser just after the break but skied the spot kick over the bar, with Jackett accepting it had been the major incident in the match.

“I thought it was maybe a little bit of a turning point in the game,” the Lions manager said.

“It got our crowd going and the players then responded very well to the crowd.

“It is a good relationship and it is a key to Millwall and a key to the home record bringing that passion out because it is great that it is there.

“You must strive towards continuing to bring that crowd into play.”
