Key points

  • Watford beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 despite spending the whole of the second half with ten men after Fernando Forestieri's sending off.
  • The Hornets went 2-1 up after Almen Abdi curled a delightful free kick into the top corner with 70 minutes on the clock.
  • At half-time it was Charlton 1 Watford 1 but the Hornets were reduced to ten men just before the break as Fernando Forestieri was sent off for a second yellow card. The first was for handball at a free kick and the second was for diving.
  • Watford took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Fernando Forestieri sent in a corner which was glanced on by Marco Cassetti and then Tommie Hoban headed past Hamer, with the help of a deflection from a Charlton defender.
  • But Charlton equalised in the 35th minute through Ricardo Fuller. He was through one-on-one on the right-hand side of the area and slotted past Manuel Almunia

7:01pm Tue 2 Oct 12

So what do you think the score will be tonight guys and girls? I really can't see us losing. A narrow Watford win or a draw for me

EstebanSemtex says...
7:33pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Nice to see an unchanged team. Continuety a must to develop partnerships.

I reckon 5-1 to the Hornets, Frank. We're going to tonk somebody soon, why not tonight?

Frank Smith says...
7:37pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Agree with you about someone getting a pasting sooner or later and no reason why it can't be tonight. Just think we are still a little vulnerable defensively. With time I expect us to improve at the back. Still looked shaky at times on Saturday, even though we were better than recent weeks

EstebanSemtex says...
7:48pm Tue 2 Oct 12

You're absolutley right about the defense being vulnerable, hence the 5-1 prediction! I reckon Hulse from the bench to cause us problems.

There is some hesitancy at the back. Huddersfield were able to capitalise on that for their second goal. Hall looks like a good signing. Him and Nosworthy plus one from Neuton, Hoban or Ekstrand looks like a decent back three. Work in progress. #BelieveInTheMegaSqu

Yes I agree. I was really impressed with Hall on Saturday. I think Neuton will get better with time and Hoban is a very good prospect. So we do have options at the back for sure.

Listening on Watford Player in South Africa. First 20 minutes sound a bit lackluster and scrappy but hoping for a 2 or 3 goal victory

Frank Smith says...
8:10pm Tue 2 Oct 12

I'll attempt to update the key points above if anything of note happens. So far there have been one effort each. Deeney's long-range strike was saved and Kerkar's free kick was deflected wide. Hoban has started well. The back three as a whole have looked good so far. 23 mins gone

8:13pm Tue 2 Oct 12

I'm limping along with the BBC Live text at work, SA. Looks as if Fuller is giving Neuton a hard time so far.

Yes, 1-0 to WFC. Come on boys, you can do it.

EstebanSemtex says...
8:26pm Tue 2 Oct 12

aaaaaannd there's the one I thought Charlton would get...

Come on lads, focus up!

Frank Smith says...
8:27pm Tue 2 Oct 12

On the whole Fuller has played up against Hoban and the young defender has done well. However, for Fuller's goal, the striker was on the right-hand side of the box (Watford's left and Neuton's side)

Sending off.

EstebanSemtex says...
8:42pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Just saw the live feed. FF off for 2 yellows?

Frank Smith says...
8:44pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Fernando Forestieri was sent off for two yellow cards. First was for handball when he jumped as part of the wall at a free kick and the second was for what Mike Dean believed was diving. It is wet out there but it did look like a dive.

EstebanSemtex says...
8:49pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Handball whilst in the wall? Sounds a tad harsh. The diving one I can believe. He's a talanted lad but he was, shall we say, theatrical at Huddersfield? He does get fouled but he goes down in a manner that attracts the wrong type of attention. Hope Zola gives him a rocket for it and he learns from his mistake.

Backs against the wall, second half. Come on lads!

Monstermunch17 says...
8:50pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Not too many Watford players sent off for diving before. Another first for the Pozzos.

DuffmanWFC says...
8:53pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Oh pants! Wonder what Zola's gonna do now? Maybe try and hold on with 10 men then bring Murray and Vydra on for the last 10 mins?

Frank Smith says...
9:07pm Tue 2 Oct 12

The Hornets have so far stayed with three at the back, although the two wide players – Cassetti and Daniel Pudil – are dropping deeper when their side are not in possession. Deeney is the lone front man

DuffmanWFC says...
9:15pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Just how long can we hold on for? Maybe Doyley on for Cassetti then Murray for Chalobah then Vydra for Deeney? Hope we can hold on then nick it?

SAHornet says...
9:25pm Tue 2 Oct 12

Great that we're in the lead but ashamed to be a fan of a team that supports cheating. I want GZ to tell him that any more behaviour like this and he'll be sent back to Udine WITHOUT DELAY. I hated Maradona for what he did and I hate FF for his antics. Hope he changes.

DuffmanWFC says...
9:29pm Tue 2 Oct 12

A bit over the top SAHornet? You can't be ashamed of our club or hate a player who could turn out to be a real gem! Zola will speak to him I'm sure but he isn't the first player or the last to be booked for simulation!

You don't know me Duffers, old chap but I hate cheats, can't help it but I do feel strongly and stand by my words. We don't want cheats at WFC. He can still redeem himself by stopping it right here and right now. Nuff said.

Can't believe a person who lives in South Africa can have such strong opinions of a player he has never seen play before or of a club that he doesn't watch week in week out? Sorry buddy I have to disagree with you on this one!

Respect your opinion Duffers but where I live and the fact that I haven't seen FF play has nothing to do with the fact that he is a cheat and I hate cheats. Do you respect Maradona for his cheating? Anyway, as I said, let's beg to differ - you have your values and I have mine. I can't help it. If he fixes it then I'll get over it but he will be a marked man from now on. Marked by his peers and more importantly, marked by every single ref in the league. Expect more yellow and red cards for him.

Forestieri will learn as now he is going to miss a game or two! I don't agree with simulation but I don't hate Forestieri either. He was fantastic against Huddersfield and helped drag us from nil points to three!

10:06pm Tue 2 Oct 12

What a result, gutted couldn't go. Hopefully Nando can cut the diving out of his game as he is a talented player but sometimes when a player gets kicked around and don't get the protection they go down and make sure the ref knows they've been fouled eg. Ronaldo, Suarez.
Shows these lads have fighting spirit and care to be here unlike some on here have argued. Think once we settle down in the coming weeks promotion should be a realistic aim. Arguably the best squad in the division, a lot more depth than everyone else! Come on you orns!

Sorry SA Hornet but I think you are a little hard on Forestieri but for the following reasons. in Argentina and most Latin countries players are not bought up with the British ideal of fair play when it comes to football, in all honesty Britain is fairly unique in this regard. In Spain and Argentina they have a word called "morbo" which is used for the darker side of football and in these cultures you are considered foolish if you don't push the rules and play with "cunning".

All that said Zola is a great example of a player who came over here and culturally adapted and I am sure he will explain to Forestieri what is the done thing in the UK.

all that said one of my favourite
Layers was Craig Ramage and he would dive around live Tom Daley! In fact his dive against Derby secured our 7th position in Roeders best season and I cheered as loudly as anyone when that penalty was scored. And I won't even start on Paul Wilkinson!......

Anyway couldn't go tonight but well done for getting the result with ten men! Absolutely excellent!
